Cowboy Facts

- Between 1867 and 1887, only 45 people were killed in “cattle-towns” and just 22 of them by cowboys!

- The golden age of cowboys only lasted from 1867 - 1886 (From the time the first railroad led from Abilene to Chicago to the great cold during the winters of 1885/86 during which 85% of all cattle died.)

- In the 1890s, former cowboys formed the famous “Rough Riders” under Lt. Cl. Theodore Roosevelt and fought in the war against Spain & Cuba in 1898.

- Cowboys were hardly allowed any contact with decent women. Many cowboys therefore organized “stag-dances” where some of them dressed-up as women and danced with the other cowboys (see picture below).
