Male blackbirds (Turdus merula) can grow to size of up to 25 cm. They weigh about 100g and their wings beat six times per second when they fly.
Blackbirds can breed upt to four times per year! They usually lay 3-5 blue-green eggs. incubation time is 11-17 days. The hatchlings leave the nest after 12-19 days.
In captivity, blackbirds can live up to 20 years whereas the normal lifespan in the wild is 4-5 years.
“Blackbird” is also the name for the Lockheed SR-71 (in service from 1966-1990). It could fly with a speed of 3,400 km/h at an altitude of 26 km, was made of titanium, leaked its fuel before takeoff and
was hotter than 300° C after landing.
